The
optimism after the First World War
was reflected in the lifestyle magazines such as "Home
and Garden" which serviced the population's need
to
create a new life. Returning troops
brought home trends from Europe, America and Japan and
Australia started to turn away from Britain to other
influences.
American troops brought
Art Deco design
influences from France and Germany and this found a
bourgeoning in Hollywood. Country arts and crafts in
California mixed with the Japanese Pegoda to produce
the
Californian Bungalow. Lawns, gardens
and curved paths became prominent along with the invention
of the Pergola. Munitions factories turned their attention
to making domestic products.
The
Cyclone Wire company emerged from this period, making
Woven Wire gates and fences. Timber fences tended to
be low with a simple capping and perhaps a feature gate
to complement the lifestyle gardens.
